Welcome to petanque at the World Outgames 2013!
Make sure to register and receive updates and more information about your sport!
Hope to see you all in Antwerp!
The games are played in trios, where everyone has two balls.
In the first round we will make a pool of 6 or 8 trios (depending on the number of participants). Everyone plays against all other players in his/her pool. After this first round a ranking for each pool will be made.
The best half of each pool plays in the head table, where a second round in two pools takes place. Again, everyone in his or her pool plays against all other players in that pool. After this, the first players of each pool play against each other, the second ones and so on to decide the final positions in the tournament.
The lower half of each pool from the first round is playing for their final places in a losers table, in the same way as in the head table.
The following table explains it all:
Play occurs in trios (3 individuals), where everyone has two balls. The composition of the trios is informal: only men, only women or a mix of the two. If you register alone there will be the possibility to form a trio with other individuals on the day itself!
As you register, just do so as an individual. On the day itself, the exact teams can be communicated to the officials.
There will be no classification according to level; everyone will have sufficient opportunities to play against stronger or weaker opponents.
Timespan: 2 days
The competition takes place on Monday 5 August and Tuesday 6 August.
A fully drawn-up schedule will be available at the venue. In that way, everyone can see and follow who is his/her next opponent. Because of the variable length of the games and the fact that there are enough playing fields available, we won’t draft start – or stop times for each game in advance.
Each competition day starts at 9.30 h.
Officials present at the venue will look to it that everyone plays against the right opponent.
- Only metal balls are allowed
- The weight of the balls are minimum 650 grams (1.43 pounds) and maximum 800 grams (1.76 pounds)
- The balls need to be marked with a label and the weight has to be clearly readable.
- Play occurs according to the international rules. These rules will be available at the officials' table.
- We will provide enough petanque balls at the venue. Of course, it is possible to bring your own! However, own balls need to be checked and weighed in advance by an official so don’t forget that when you register at the venue.
The competition will follow the international rules, you can download them here: petanque rules woga.

Bronze, silver and gold medals for the first three trios.
Petanque is a form of boules (bowling) where the goal is, while standing with the feet together in a small circle, to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (jack). The game is normally played on hard dirt or gravel, but can also be played on grass or other surfaces. Concentration, precision and coordination are important as your team tries to get the most balls as close as possible against to the cochonnet.
The petanque competition will be open to all participants including impaired athletes and freely accessible for spectators.
